What Is An Academic Search Engine?
As the name suggests, academic search engines (ASEs) are specialized search engines designed to cater to researchers, scholars, and students' unique needs. These engines bridge the vast expanse of the internet and the rigor of scholarly sources, making them a vital tool for anyone delving into academic research. Unlike traditional academic databases that often require subscriptions or payments, most ASEs are freely available, making them widely accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
The fundamental goal of an ASE is to streamline the research process by providing quick access to a wealth of scholarly literature. The search results are typically sorted by topic and significance, with the most cited publications appearing higher. This feature is incredibly useful for researchers looking to identify key sources within their field of study quickly.
ASEs often link directly to full-text articles, making it easy for users to access the information they need without navigating through multiple platforms. One of the standout features of ASEs is their ability to provide users with a treasure trove of resources that can be used to compile an extensive bibliography. This functionality can be incredibly helpful when embarking on a literature review, allowing researchers to collate various relevant sources quickly and efficiently. By leveraging the power of ASEs, researchers can easily navigate the complexities of the academic landscape, saving valuable time and effort.
Academic search engines are crucial tools for anyone looking to enter the world of scholarly research. By harnessing the power of these specialized platforms, researchers can easily navigate the vast sea of academic literature and access the information they need to advance their work.
Academic search engines are essential because they convey crucial ideas about learning and teaching, which can be directly implemented in the classroom. This tool allows educators to equip students with the latest information, ensuring their knowledge is up-to-date and relevant.

5. Global Access to Knowledge
Academic search engines break down the geographical barriers to learning. They are incredibly useful, as individuals worldwide can tap into a wealth of knowledge and information, enhancing their educational experiences.
6. Enhancing Overall Development
Search engines are pivotal in supporting students' development in a learning environment. They facilitate research, exploration, and learning, aiding in learners' academic and personal growth.
7. Convenience and Time-Saving
Using educational engines, students can save significant time that would otherwise be spent scouring the internet for relevant information. The convenience of these engines ensures that learners can quickly access the resources they need for their academic endeavors and assignments.
8. Improved Information Accessibility

When you upload a document, Unriddle generates an AI assistant on top of this data.
Click 'New' in the right sidebar and then select 'Upload' to get started.
Use this assistant to answer specific questions about the text, summarize content and simplify jargon.
The trick is to be super clear about what you want.
If you're summarizing a research paper, for example, instead of saying “Summarize” or “Summarize this research paper”, say something like “Explain this research paper to me in simple terms. What method did the researchers use? What did they find? Why does it matter?”.
The second prompt will produce a much better overview of the paper because we're giving the AI more hints about what we want.
Automatic relations
Unriddle grasps the context behind each Note and Document in your library and automatically links them based on meaning.
Let's say you have a collection of nuclear physics papers in your library.
When you start writing a note about The Manhattan Project, simply mentioning "The Manhattan Project" will prompt Unriddle to find the connection between this note and the nuclear physics papers.
Even if you didn't explicitly mention the research papers, Unriddle's knowledge of Oppenheimer, his work, and the significant relevance of these papers means it understands the connection and automatically links them together.
In short, Unriddle shows you relevant content from your library at the exact moment you need it, even if you haven't explicitly mentioned it.
Citing your sources
Writing is hard when you have a ton of sources to track.
So we made it easy.
Highlight some text, click ‘Cite’ and you’ll see items from your library that contain information related to the selection of text you just highlighted as determined by our AI.
When you select an item Unriddle inserts a link into highlighted text that, when clicked, takes you to the referenced item.
Writing with AI
Click ‘New’ in the sidebar and hit ‘Note’ to open up a new note.
Here you’ll find all the text formatting options you’re used to and more.
Type ‘++’ to generate text based on the context of what’s already written.
Highlight text and click ‘Ask AI’ to open up the AI menu where you’ll find options to improve, expand, summarize and explain.
You can type custom prompts too!
Finally, you can open any note in a pane on the right side of the screen while interacting with documents. Just click the orange pencil icon at the top of the chat window.
Chat Settings
Adjust the model, temperature and response length in the Setting sidebar.
Click the cog icon in the top right corner of the screen and look for "Chat Settings".
These apply across all documents but you can easily flip between them regardless of settings at the time of upload.
Model: the machine learning model used to generate responses.
Temperature: the amount of creative license you give to the AI.
Max length: the maximum number of words generated in a response.
Got feedback or questions? Send us an email and we'll get back to you within a day.

5 Tips For Using Academic Search Engines
1. Summarize Your Topic or Research Questions
When utilizing academic search engines (ASEs) to gather information for your research, it's essential to summarize your topic or research questions concisely. This will help you focus on relevant keywords and alternate search terms to yield the most accurate and useful results.
2. Underline Keywords in Your Topic
Underlining keywords in your topic helps identify the main concepts that should be included in your search query. Besides, listing synonyms as alternate search terms can broaden your search results and ensure you don't miss any relevant information.
3. Search Using Different Combinations of Keywords:
After identifying your keywords and synonyms, search using different combinations to evaluate the number of relevant results. If you get too many results, try narrowing your search using specific terms. Conversely, if there are too few results, broaden your search by including more general terms.
4. Sort Results by Publication Time Frame and Citation Counts:
To streamline your research efforts, sort the search results by publication time frame and citation counts. This allows you to identify the most recent and highly cited articles that will likely be more relevant to your topic. Saving these articles to a personalized reading list can help you keep track of valuable resources.
5. Use the "Cited By" or "Related Articles" Functionality:
To expand the scope of your research and uncover additional valuable resources, take advantage of the "cited by" or "related articles" functionality offered by ASEs. This feature can lead you to key references you may have missed initially, enriching your research and providing a more comprehensive understanding of your topic.
