I always clearly establish why I am summarizing an article before diving in. Depending on your summary's purpose, it can be detailed or concise. For example, if I need to summarize the article for future reference, I might write a comprehensive summary. If the goal is to integrate the article into a paper, I would focus on how it relates to my research.
2. Reading the Article
Understanding the research is crucial before writing about it. This process can take longer than anticipated. So, it's essential to be patient. The article should be summarized so that someone who hasn’t read it can understand it by hearing you explain it in your own words.
3. Scanning the Article First
I constantly scan the article initially to identify its main points instead of reading it from beginning to end, which can be overwhelming. I focus on identifying:
The research question and study reason as stated in the Introduction
Hypotheses tested in the Introduction
How the hypothesis was tested as per the Methodology
The findings in the Results section
The findings' interpretation in the Discussion section
4. Reading for Depth and Interactively
After highlighting the primary points in the scan, I read each section multiple times. During reading, I ask myself the following questions:
How does the study's design address the research questions?
How convincing are the findings, and do they present any surprises?
What does the study contribute to answering the original question?
Which aspects of the original question remain unanswered?
5. Avoiding Plagiarism
I always strive to avoid plagiarism when summarizing another's work by:
Taking notes in my own words to rewrite them later
Ensuring I don't rely too heavily on the original language
6. Writing the Summary
When writing a research summary, I aim to provide a brief overview of the study. I identify the crucial information and condense it for the reader. The more I understand the topic, the easier it is to explain it concisely and comprehensively.
7. Writing a First Draft
I structure my first draft using the order of the article. I adjust the length based on the content and intended use of the summary. The first draft covers the research question, hypothesis, methodology, results, implications, and their relation to the hypothesis.
8. Editing for Completeness and Accuracy
I add the necessary information to enhance completeness and remove irrelevant details. The focus is maintained on the research question, ensuring conciseness and avoiding generalizations.
9. Editing for Style
In the final step, I edit for style by writing for an intelligent but slightly naïve audience. I eliminate wordiness, use precise language, employ scientific terminology accurately, rely on paraphrasing, and ensure the language is both clear and specific. I have others review the summary for any missed errors.

Highlight some text, click ‘Cite’ and you’ll see items from your library that contain information related to the selection of text you just highlighted as determined by our AI.
When you select an item Unriddle inserts a link into highlighted text that, when clicked, takes you to the referenced item.
Writing with AI
Click ‘New’ in the sidebar and hit ‘Note’ to open up a new note.
Here you’ll find all the text formatting options you’re used to and more.
Type ‘++’ to generate text based on the context of what’s already written.
Highlight text and click ‘Ask AI’ to open up the AI menu where you’ll find options to improve, expand, summarize and explain.

Finally, you can open any note in a pane on the right side of the screen while interacting with documents. Just click the orange pencil icon at the top of the chat window.
Chat Settings
Adjust the model, temperature and response length in the Setting sidebar.
Click the cog icon in the top right corner of the screen and look for "Chat Settings".
These apply across all documents but you can easily flip between them regardless of settings at the time of upload.
Model: the machine learning model used to generate responses.
Temperature: the amount of creative license you give to the AI.
